To Report Abuse

• Remember children do not usually lie about sexual abuse. It is important the child feels like you believe him/her.

• Reassure the child that they made the right decision to tell you. Sometimes children feel afraid to disclose.

• Don’t ask anymore questions to investigate the abuse because it could hinder the investigation and traumatize the child. Leave it to the investigation.

• Make sure you take the child to a safe and quiet place to talk about the abuse. Don’t tell any person who is not involved with the incident.

• Report it ASAP or within 48 hours (Family Code 261.102, Penal Code 21.11) to:

• If you feel a child is physically hurt or injured by abuse seek immediate medical attention.

• Maintain a caring relationship with the child.
